Made-Up Holidays?!

Happy Mother's Day!

So, I've been telling myself all week that I need to get my mother something for Mother's Day. I've been reminding myself all week. All week.

Now Mother's Day is finally upon us, and alas, there is no gift. Oh, the shame!

At least we had a nice homecooked meal together.

Overall, I gotta say I like Mother's Day as a whole. It's a simple holiday. I like things that are simple, and it's meaningful because I have a lot of strong God-fearing mother figures that I admire and respect. There's a meaning to it that Father's Day doesn't have, since I grew up separated from my father.

Growing up, I used to wonder why there was a Father's Day and a Mother's Day but there was never a Children's Day. We could honor the mother and father, but not the children? Whaaattt?

Though really, putting up with children is probably the reason why mothers and fathers should be honored in the first place, heh heh. I've had my share of being a troublesome child. Sometimes, I'm still troublesome even at 22.

A Children's Day sounds interesting. It wouldn't be the first time I made up a holiday. I used to make up holidays and celebrate them when they came around. This was when I was a kid so I do not remember much of the holiday's I made. I remember there was a "Ninja Day," a day where you get to be a ninja for one day, or at least pretend to be.

I didn't have a ninja mask, so I took a thick black beanie, and put it over my face, effectively both blinding myself and cutting off my air supply but at least I looked cool! In my own head actually. I would then proceed to fight with my own shadow, not that I could see my shadow because I was blind, so I would end up doing more fighting the air than anything else.

What was the point of this holiday? I have no idea. I was just at an age where I was obsessed with ninjas. I blame Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Speaking of holidays, I have to ask. Do birthdays count as holidays, or not? On the one hand, it's treated as a holiday but a variable one since you celebrate it on the day you were born and you celebrate it multiple times a year depending on whose birthday comes along.

I wonder if I could get away with celebrating a birthday every day? Culturally, you always celebrate the birthday of someone you know, but why leave out the birthdays of others just because you don't know them? What kind of exclusivity is that? It's nicer to have birthday parties every day because someone somewhere in the world is having a birthday today and I wouldn't want to leave them out.

Looking back, I don't remember what happened to all my made-up holidays. I forgot about them, I suppose. Probably for the best. Some of my holidays were cringe-worthy.

I have a picture, actually, of one of the times I wore my hat over my face as a mask for Ninja Day. If I find it, I'll probably update this page and add the picture.

Does anyone else think holidays are like sports? You have the mainstream ones, like Thanksgiving and Christmas on the holiday side, and Basketball and Football on the sports side, and then you have the ones that no one knows about and barely thinks about, like Leif Erikson Day and Water Polo, and then you have all the ones in between.

And believe me, I've made up quite a few sports in my lifetime too. Some of them were actually pretty fun.

Oh, wow, look at the time. I'm late for a meeting. Better post this and move on with my night. Have a pleasant evening, everyone!
